Doctor providing aid in the Caribbean
In 2014 we were approached by a doctor who needed some help. He was born and raised in the Caribbean and had been hitting road blocks when trying to give back to the community where he grew up. He worked full time in the United States, and would regularly take trips to help provide medical care in under-served areas. Originally, he was paying for these trips out of his own pocket, costing him in excess of $20,000 per trip between his travel, accommodations, and even the medical supplies he was paying for out of his own pocket. He had even approached the hospital he was working for to see if they would help sponsor his trips or provide any medical supplies for his trips. The hospital denied his requests. After National Tax Services got involved, we were able to help him establish a nonprofit for his endeavors. At that point, he was able to donate the money for his medical mission work to the nonprofit, which also became a tax deductible donation. He was able to reduce his tax liability, but didn't see any changes in the care he was delivering during his trips. The hospital even reversed course and began donating medical supplies because they too could write off their donations on their taxes.
Compressed air safety classes
We were approached by another client who had been delivering compressed air systems to manufacturing companies. His concern was that workers who were relatively new to using compressed air systems would not understand the inherent risks associated with these systems. Originally he was providing some basic education on these systems once they were delivered. He saw this as a necessary endeavor but was originally providing these classes out of his own pocket. After consulting with National Tax Services, we were able to set up a nonprofit for him which allowed him to donate the funds he was spending on these classes. Along with now providing courses tax deductible, he was able to reach out to companies to help donate funds to teach further classes.
Counseling young women on body image issues
One of our tax clients reached a point where she had achieved some milestones in her career and was ready to give back to the community. One issue she had faced as a child was dealing with childhood cancer and the resulting body images afterwards. She wanted to help provide resources to young women dealing with body image issues. In order to assist other young women that experienced similar issues she fought herself, she began working through providing counseling opportunities. When National Tax Services got involved, we were able to help her structure this into her own nonprofit. Now, the support she provides young women is now tax deductible. This has saved her a significant amount in taxes and allowed her to donate these savings into her nonprofit to help further her mission.
Teaching financial planning to high school graduates
A former wealth manager from a regional bank saw many of the high school graduates moving into the working world were struggling with basic finances. He noticed trends amongst these graduates and started to move to help assist them by providing some basic finance courses. Students struggled with simple things like balancing a budget, planning expenses and preparing for major life expenses like buying a house. Originally the high school graduates could not afford services that high net worth individuals received, and he was trying to figure out a solution to connect those in need of basic financial education. He approached National Tax Services and we were able to help him set up his nonprofit to deliver the education via classes. All of the expenses for his finance classes were now tax deductible and it allowed him to reach out to financial firms and banks to recruit more assets to help deliver further classes.
